Boat cash boost for disabled

MORE disabled adults in Lincolnshire will be able to enjoy sailing after local charity Hykeham Sailability was awarded £10,000 from Sport England to invest in a new boat.

Around 40 local disabled people have regularly enjoyed getting out on the water with Hykeham Sailability since the club was launched two years ago at Apex Lakes.

Now with the new boat, the ‘Barbara Clare’, named after the wife of Sailability chairman, Sleaford Rotarian Keven Roberts, added to the existing fleet of Access dingies, it is hoped that up to 65 would-be sailors will now be able to take up sailing over the next year.

“This new Drascombe Dabber keelboat will make an enormous difference for all those people with severe disabilities, because it is designed as a sea-going boat and, therefore, extremely stable on a lake,”commented Keven.

“Sailing is one of the very few sports in which able-bodied sailors and those disabled can participate on equal terms, which is the purpose of Hykeham Sailability’

Janet Inman, of Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “We are keen to support Hykeham Sailability, which provides an invaluable resource to the community and to the county as a whole.”

Howard Nelson, chairman of The Royal Yatching Association East Midlands, commented: “The achievement and enjoyment that comes from getting afloat is huge.

“Self-esteem is, without question, one of the biggest things people can get from sailing.

“It is equally rewarding to the volunteers and coaches who make all this possible’

Hykeham Sailability meets, weather permitting, every Friday, between 1pm and 4pm, from Easter to late September.

The charity would welcome offers of help from anyone willing to support this project.

Anyone interested in becoming involved can contact Keven Roberts on 07711 206969.
