Cadets ‘flying without wings’ in glider course

Air Cadets were flying high as they reaped the benefits of being named the country’s top squadron.
Twelve Cadets from the Air Training Corps 2160 Sleaford Sqn have been successfully awarded gliding scholarships, which they took on at the Air Cadet Central Gliding School at RAF Syerston.
The Cadets started their training by completing the Gliding Induction Course which involves a series of flights teaching the basics of airmanship and control of a glider, then once they turned 16 they become eligible to complete the Air Cadet Gliding scholarship.
Blue Wings are awarded for completion of the basic course and the cadet flying a ‘Ghost Solo’ (where an instructor is present but sits in the back of the glider doesn’t intervene unless abolutely necessery), with Silver Wings awarded to cadets who show a high enough standard of airmanship to fly the glider solo.
Sgt Sam Beresford was awarded the Gold Wings for outstanding ability and the ability to fly solo on multiple flights.
Twelve cadets completing scholarships in one week is a first for Sleaford Squadron.
Cadet Alice Davies said: “I had the time of my life and really enjoyed myself. I learned loads, and felt really proud when I completed my solo.”
2160 Sleaford Sqn headquarters is located at the Cadet Centre on the Drove, and parades take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 7pm and 9.30pm.
