CALLS TO BIN WASTE STORAGE YARD PLAN

A DEPOT for dustbin lorries to drop off waste for burning to produce energy instead of being buried in landfill has met opposition.

Lincolnshire County Council plans to construct a waste transfer station on land at Sleaford Enterprise Park, just to the south of Sleaford Wood. Domestic household waste would be dropped off at the site before going on to the new Energy From Waste electricity and heat generation plant at Whisby, which is due to be ready in 2013.

The rubbish would be kept enclosed in the building and there would be a weighbridge, office and staff room.

Head of environmental services at the county council, Sean Kent, said: “We need to make sure the waste is taken to the EfW facility in the most efficient way, which is why we need five transfer stations around the county.

“The waste from the black bins is taken here by the kerbside refuse collection vehicles and bulked up onto larger vehicles and transported to the facility along the main road networks.

“It was no longer an option for the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership, consisting of all the local authorities and Environment Agency, to continue sending waste to landfill, owing to the increasing taxation and possible fines we face. The facility is the right solution for the county’s waste problem – it is safe, clean and affordable.”

But Sleaford Town Council has objected to the proposal due to its proximity to food related processing businesses such as J L Priestley and Sleaford Brewery. The town council has recommended it be placed further away from town on the opposite side of the A17.

Local businessman Chris Smith, who set up Sleaford Brewery on the Enterprise Park almost a year ago, is also concerned about the affect the rotting rubbish dropped off at the waste station will have on his product.

He said: “It is about three yards from the back of my yard. I don’t understand why it’s required. From what I have read is all they will have is a spray system to keep down dust and odours from getting outside.

“But when something like a rotting apple starts to ferment it releases wild yeast which is very strong and murders beer yeast.”

bit of a downer for my family, house sold ready to relocate, just two weeks to go and this pops up on the search. Buyers have now pulled out. My wife was informed by LCC, Ian Crowther ( 01522 552396) that NO waste would be stored on site.
