County award for good citizen teenager Jake

A YOUNG conservationist has been rewarded for his work in the community with a Lincolnshire County Council award.

Fifteen-year-old Jake Beaty, of Welbourn, won the Young Citizen of the Year Award in the Lincolnshire Good Citizen Awards for his continuing work and dedication to his community and for inspiring other young people to get involved in conservation projects.

A pupil at Sir William Robertson High School in Welbourn, Jake is a member of West Kesteven Wildlife Watch and is one of the  group’s young leaders. An RSPB Explorer, Jake helps organise events and outings with the other members.

He also gives his time to Welbourn Forge, a local Victorian heritage centre, spending time with visitors and helping out with the various activities at the forge.

In addition, Jake has recently joined the Police Cadets and hopes to be a police officer when he is older.

Among his other community activities, he helped out at a local care home for six months while working towards his bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. This involved reading and talking to residents, as well as gardening, and he described it as a ‘really fulfilling experience’.

Jake said: “It was a big surprise to win the award. These things I do are my hobbies and something which I really enjoy. But to win the award is brilliant.

“I live in a nice countryside area and it is good to be able go out and enjoy it and to be able to show others the things I enjoy is great.”

Jake was nominated by Coun Marianne Overton, who described his commitment to the community as ‘extraordinary’.
