AN event to offer information and guidance to older people was held in Heckington.

Kathy Lote, First Contact field coordinator for North Kesteven, said the event, held at Heckington Village Hall, was a success.

Mrs Lote, who works for Age UK, said the free coffee morning was organised for residents in Heckington and the surrounding area to learn more about what the First Contact scheme could offer.

Staff can provide a checklist to help people, aged 60 and over, get in touch with several local services in North Kesteven providing information, advice and support on issues such as home and fire safety, housing, adult social care, energy efficiency, falls prevention, healthy lifestyles, pensions and benefits, social clubs, activities and day care services, caring (for friends or relatives), domestic help and volunteering.

Around 30 people attended the coffee morning.

Visitors learnt about the return of hot meals on wheels and the new Evergreen befriending service launching in October for housebound people. There was also help about pensions and benefits and the Call Connect bus service and other transport schemes.

Mrs Lote hopes to run more information events around the district in the spring and if anyone wants to host an event they can contact her 01522 782172 or 07971 244801.

You can pick up a First Contact leaflet at your GP surgery, parish or district council offices. The checklist can now also be completed online by visiting www.firstcontact.org.uk or call the numbers above.
