Girls’ Brigade members are preparing for visit to Kenya

AT Sleaford Girls’ Brigade’s 31st annual display and presentation event at Riverside Church, the girls entertained family and friends with a short pantomime of Cinderella.

More than 40 girls took part, ranging in age from four to 18.

The evening concluded with the presentation of awards to the girls for attendance, badge work and outstanding contributions to the Brigade over the last year. The awards were presented by Air Commodore Barbara Cooper and Dorothy Sylvester, who was a WREN in World War Two.

The Girls’ and Boys’ Brigades also took the opportunity to launch their fund-raising campaign for an Easter time visit to Kenya. The Brigades of Sleaford, together with some brigade members from elsewhere in Lincolnshire, have built up links with Girls’ and Boys’ Brigade companies in the Embu region of Kenya.

Carole Jackson, an officer with 1st Sleaford Girls’ Brigade and organiser of the visit, said: “This will be the fourth time we have taken a group from Sleaford. The young people benefit enormously from these visits and get the chance to see how people in other parts of the world live. In this area they have enough food but they are very poor.

“We take gifts of pens and pencils and a monetary gift of about £25 to give to each Brigade company we visit. This relatively small amount goes a very long way in that country.”

The Brigades hope to raise two-thirds of the cost of the visit for the young Brigade members, with the adults paying for themselves. They began their fund-raising with a cake stall on Friday at The Source Café, Riverside Church in Southgate.

If you would like to make a donation to help with the visit to Kenya or if you are a business or retailer in Sleaford and would be willing to have a collecting tin on your counter, contact Carole Jackson by email at g.cjackson@btinternet.com.
