It was demolition time for an aging community hall as villagers took part in the levelling of the building to make way for a new project.

Clearance work started on Heydour Village Hall at Aisby last Tuesday morning when parish council chairman Mike Bromige took the first swings with the ‘Golden Sledgehammer’ before experts moved in to finish the job ready for a new hall to be built next year.

The new hall is due to be completed in June. The old hall, dated from the First World War and was largely an old officers’ mess hut used by the Machine Gun Corps at Belton House.

Villagers in Heydour, Aisby and Oasby have raised £85,000 in less than four years to help pay for the new building along with a £500,000 BIG Lottery grant, £75,000 from WREN, about £26,000 from Lincolnshire County Council and South Kesteven District Council, and £10,000 from Garfield Weston Foundation.

Chairman of the parish hall committee Norman Hatcliff said: “The new hall will give us 63 per cent more usable space. It will be significantly larger. There will be a permanent stage, a separate meeting room and a fully-equipped kitchen.

“For a community of this size to get this far is amazing. I am very excited about it. This new hall will be a legacy for a hundred years whereas the old building has also been here for a hundred years. The new hall will be built in a style to complement the buildings around the green.”

Mr Bromige, who is also vice-chairman of the hall committee, said: “It’s a very lively community and the committee have put in a lot of work.”
