ONE of Sleaford’s littering hotspots has had to be cleared again, just months after a comprehensive clean up left it spotless.

The land to the side of Galley Hill bridge on Lincoln Road was cleared by North Kesteven District Council in August but it has taken townspeople just four months to reduce it to a rubbish heap again.

Rangers from the Hill Holt Wood project have gone out last week to litter pick again as part of the WatchNK programme.

Mayor of Sleaford John Charlesworth is a town councillor for Holdingham and took photos of the mess. He said: “The other side of the Lincoln Road is also bad and it has spread to the railway line. It is an example of how attitudes to litter need to be changed. It is unsightly, unhealthy and costly to clear.”

Meanwhile volunteers have offered to help keep the banks of the River Slea tidy. Arthur Wright, an executive committee member of Sleaford Civic Trust explained his organisation maintains the patch of land beside East Banks, known as The Cut.

He said: “We were talking about how the river was in a bit of a mess with bottles and cans.

“So we got together with members of the Friends of Lollycocks Field and agreed to occasionally walk down the river bank as far as Cogglesford Mill and back again picking up whatever litter we find, put them in plastic bags and leave them with the Town Council to collect.”

The council has issued the litter picking band with grabbers, high visibility coats and dustbin bags to assist in their public spirited work. He said some members are simply looking out for litter while walking to the swimming pool or exercising dogs. More volunteers are welcome and he is hoping to join forces with the Friends of the Nettles. Mr Wright said: “There are people who complain about the state of the river bank, we are going to do something about it. If people didn’t throw it in the water we would not have to volunteer to pick it up.”
