Man jailed for hammer attack
Wednesday 1pm - A TWENTY-year-old man from Mablethorpe received a 44-month prison sentence at Lincoln Crown Court on Wednesday.
Robert Mark Burton, of Marion Avenue, was charged with occasioning actual bodily harm on David Wormall, of Somersby Avenue, Mablethorpe, on August 14, 2008.
Recorder Rupert Mayo said: "You had a minor grievance concerning satellite navigation equipment which you claimed was stolen from your van.
"You left between 6.40-6.58pm and later a text message was sent to him. You then returned with a hammer and Mr Wormall was struck inside the home on the shoulder and head with the hammer.
"He pleaded with you to stop and pushed you out the house."
The hammer blow caused a 3cm cut to Mr Wormall's head.
Burton was under a community order for burglary at the time.
Mr Mayo added: "It was a premeditated and vicious attack and there was no remorse for it."
In mitigation, Lauren Rafter, defending, said: "This is a man who is at the end of the line and destined for a life in and out of custody.
"He is at an extremely important junction in his life and what happens next could be extremely influential in his future in terms of personal relationships and employment."
Mr Mayo said Burton would only serve half his sentence and had already served 298 days, meaning he will spend another 12 months in prison.
Burton also received a two month sentence for criminal damage after smashing doors and windows at Mr Wormall's property and a two month sentence for breaching a community order. Both will run concurrently.
Mr Mayo added: "From your early teens you have been violent to the public, police and other people you have come into contact with.
"This activity should not be dealt to anybody and what you set out to do was wicked and cruel."
