VILLAGERS near Sleaford are celebrating the completion of a £23,000 refurbishment project of their play area.

Work started on the Mount Lane play area in Kirkby La Thorpe back in February when parish councillors first broke the ground.

Since then contractors have been on site installing a fantastic, multi-use activity climbing frame as well as refurbishing the existing swings and fitting a new picnic table and bench.

Rob Hipworth, the parish council chairman, officially unveiled it to the community on Thursday afternoon when he explained that the largest portion was paid for with Lottery money - £10,000 - without which the project would not have got off the ground.

The Tesco Charitable Trust gave another £4,000 and there were contributions from North Kesteven District Council, Thorpe and Asgarby Estate
and the parish council had
saved up £8,000 over several years.

Mr Hipworth said: “Eight or nine years ago the parish council thought they needed to make the play area more child and family friendly. The children’s play equipment had served its purpose since my wife and I raised the money to buy this plot of land 35 years ago and the kit was showing its age. Health and safety concerns were being raised and we felt we should do something.”

There was a major consultation exercise asking school children what they would like to see on teh site and there were lots
of ideas - especially ‘monkey’ bars.

Since completion the children have been thrilled with the new equipment and the benches make it much better for adults to stay with their children.

Parish clerk Debbie Scott said a local child minder was very pleased with the extra facilities to entertain her children and visits the field more often.

Representatives of the parish council, Thorpe and Asgarby Estate, Tesco, the Lottery, chairman of NKDC Ray Cucksey and local county councillor David Dickinson were all present for teh unveiling and families enjoyed refreshments and face painting.
