Parish delighted as bell tower restored

AFTER more than a year of fund-raising, a church bell tower has finally been restored to its former glory.
The restoration of the bell tower of All Saints’ Church, Wellingore has now been completed and the last of the scaffolding was removed last week.
The church’s committee has had a long struggle to raise the money needed for the work, which was originally estimated at £110,000 then later reduced to £85,000.
This was further reduced to £53,000 after it was decided, following advice from English Heritage, that the guttering work should be undertaken at a later date to save costs after the church had to find £20,000 out of the budget following the theft of lead from the roof to pay for terne-coated steel to replace the roofing.
Grants from the English Heritage Lottery Fund, the All Churches Trust, Church Buildings Council and the Marshall’s Charity helped to make the target more feasible and further money was added to the pot thanks to fundraising events such as garden shows, charity balls, musical evenings and The Great Cliffside Bake-Off.
Graffoe parish rector Canon Kathryn Windslow said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributed in any way towards this successful outcome.”
To celebrate the project’s completion, a Songs of Praise and Patronal Festival will be held on October 29 at 7pm, with the Bishop of Lincoln, the Rt Rev Christopher Lowson, coming to celebrate with the parish.
