Pool party to celebrate 40 years

VILLAGERS marked the 40th anniversary of their community pool opening with a weekend of celebrations.

The lovely weather made for a perfect end to the season as Billinghay’s swimming pool volunteers threw a party for the village.

Re-enacting the official opening ceremony 40 years ago, MP Stephen Phillips cut a ribbon to kick off proceedings on the Saturday. He brought his two children along for a swim too.

In the evening about helpers and their families enjoyed a barbecue party, including Mary Bailey, whose husband was there at the beginning and went in the pool with a life jacket under his jumper for a photo for the Sleaford Standard despite being unable to swim.

On the Sunday, 30 youngsters joined in an It’s A Knockout style tournament and more tried out the mobile skate park and climbing wall loaned by North Kesteven District Council.

Joint chairman of the pool committee Jayne Pannell said: “We have been very lucky that people continue to support us. For a pool to last for 40 years in a rural village means there must be a place for it.”

They are hoping to get funding for a new cover meaning they will not have to drain it, saving on water bills and keeping out the debris and frogs that get in during colder months.

Fundraising continues with a quiz night and a scarecrow contest during the feast weekend of October 13, in an effort to pay off a massive water bill from a leak in the pool lining which could only be pinpointed by sending in a scuba diver.
