Poultry farm expansion plan approved

RESIDENTS have failed in their bid to block expansion plans for a poultry farm to house an extra 106,000 birds.

North Kesteven District Council planning committee gave the go ahead for the scheme by Moy Park to develop Padleys Farm in Billinghay Dales, located south of the A153 Tattershall road, after the company offered to enter a legal agreement to limit its hours of vehicle movements to the sheds.

The poultry farm, which already has 16 poultry houses plus two bungalows for staff to live on site, will see another four buildings with ancillary gas, oil and water tanks and six feed silos added.

Neighbouring residents, scattered along the narrow dead end lane leading to the farm, opposed the expansion for fear of increased disturbance from delivery and maintenance vehicles, as well as lorries collecting the birds for processing at the company’s Anwick factory.

Their main concern was the minor road could not take the heavy vehicles that often end up using residents’ driveways and lawns to pass.

Sharon Jones said they were often disturbed by vehicles at night cleaning out and re-stocking the sheds and vibration from the lorries. She claimed vehicles often went too fast, endangering pedestrians and also claimed there had been instances of drivers being verbally abusive.

A call for a 30mph limit on the road was dismissed as it did not fit the criteria set down by the county highways department.

Moy Park’s Lars Brattinger said they took health and safety very seriously, their company vehicles were fitted with trackers and if contractors were found to be speeding they would be out too.

Likely smells were said be well within acceptable limits.

Two existing passing places are to be extended and widened to better accommodate the lorries and two more would be added.

Ward councillor GIll Ogden felt she could not support the application as she would have liked to have seen more restrictions on night time vehicle movement.

She said: “It seems Moy Park have given with one hand and taken away with the other.”

But the other Billinghay, Martin and North Kyme ward councillor, Michael Powell, backed the plan.
