RAF padre launches Write Your Own Bible scheme

IN 2011 Britain celebrates the 400th anniversary of the authorised version of the Bible which opened up the Scriptures to ordinary people.

RAF Cranwell Padre and Methodist Minister the Rev (Flt Lt) Melanie Reed, decided that it was important to highlight Lent in some form.

With the Methodist Conference pledging to copy out by hand the entire Bible, it wasn’t long before Rev Reed had an idea of doing her own version locally. Personnel and civilians soon caught onto the idea and the project was launched for Lent with writing stations set up in the Chaplaincy Centre and the Brunei Community Centre where anyone, associated with RAF Cranwell or not, can come along during working hours and copy out some verses of scripture.

The project has started with the Gospels and individuals have been encouraged to copy as little or as much as they like and to return as many times during the weeks of Lent as they wish.

Some may wish to dedicate their piece to someone who has had a particular influence on their life and all contributors are being asked to sign their name and record the date.

When complete, the hand copied scriptures will be used as a resource in St Andrew’s, the Church of Scotland and Free Church Chapel, that makes up one of the three places of worship at RAF Cranwell.

The hand written words will be read out during worship at St Andrew’s for years to come and Sarah Oborn, wife to the Commandant at RAF Cranwell, agreed to launch the project by being the first person to put pen to paper.
