Record low turnout for police and crime commissioner election
The election count in North Kesteven gets under way this afternoon.
The turnout figure for the Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire could be the lowest an election in the county’s history.
North Kesteven is holding its official count from 1pm at the North Kesteven Centre in North Hykeham, but none of the four candidates are expected to be present, instead awaiting to hear the overall result in Lincoln.
The official turnout for the district has been revealed as 15.84 per cent, by far the lowest for an election on record for the area. Meaning whoever does get elected will have done so on the decision of less than two out of every 10 of the voting population.
Polling stations were reporting very slow business during Thursday as people, for a variety of reasons, chose to stay away and not vote to decide which man will replace the Lincolnshire Police Authority in holding the county’s force to account on behalf of the public and setting budget priorities.
It was deserted at the St Botolph’s Community Centre polling station on Thursday evening when there would normally be an after work rush for other local elections, while at 6pm the polling station in Sleaford Golf Club at Greylees had seen just 30 people all day.
