A SERVICE of re-dedication was held at St Andrew’s Church, Asgarby, a year after metal thieves took all the lead lining from the roof.

Treasurer Richard Godson said the small parish was very fortunate in being able to secure a grant from the Lincolnshire Churches Trust towards the cost, in excess of £20,000, to replace the roof, and the rest has come from fundraising accumulated over many years.

He said: “We were left a bequest back in the 1950s which produces some income each year for repairs and that has been used.”

Instead of lead, they have been permitted to use terne-coated stainless steel. It has little value and so is less attractive to thieves. Mr Godson believed a gang of metal thieves possibly responsible for taking the lead had been caught by police.

The sheets of metal have been fixed to thick plywood which is laid on top of planks and boards lying on the rafters. Mr Godson said: “It has been a year since the lead was stolen. We had some temporary sheeting but that has not been very effective and we have had to cover the pews with plastic sheeting and pray for fine weather, which there was up until April, then the weather has been awful.”

The repair work was completed by a firm from Peterborough about six weeks ago and the service of thanksgiving was led by Bishop of Lincoln, the Rt Rev Christopher Lowson, with parish priest the Rev Christopher Harrington.
