Sun shines on Heckington Show to make fab weekend - VIDEO
AFTER weeks of doubt and rain, the 145th Heckington Show went ahead without a hitch.
Show chairman Charles Pinchbeck said the most anxious time had been the two to three weeks prior to the event with doubts whether it would be possible to put on such a major event because of the wet weather.
In the end Sunday saw a couple of showers but not enough to deter the crowds, with Saturday being the best single day ever. Sunday was down on numbers slightly, but Mr Pinchebeck suspected the weather forecasts may have put a few people off along with the Olympics hangover.
He said: “It is looking at a total guide figure of over 28,000, a little down on last year’s record 30,000, yet still on the upward trend.
“We are lucky to at least have a show as not many event organisers have been blessed in the way we have with good weather. Traders were delighted to be able to trade. One had had eight shows cancelled this year, so hopefully we managed to help those people by giving them a chance as we need them to thrive.”
Mr Pinchbeck was proud that volunteers had coped so well with the number of visitors, with no real queues for parking or toilets. One family told him they had never been before but were already planning to visit again next time both days.
There was everything from the traditional sports and livestock judging to eye-popping stunts and massive monster trucks.
Among the highlights was the launch of a new book, by Catherine Wilson, Alan and Sue Stennett, on Lincolnshire’s Farm Animals. The launch featured live examples of Lincolnshire Buff chickens, Lincolnshire Red cattle, Lincoln Longwool sheep and Lincolnshire curly coated pigs.
It was a good debut for Heckington St Andrew’s Primary School in running one of the tea tents, with parents and pupils helping to raise a tidy sum for school staging.
Also making debuts at the music marquee was Heckington singer songwriter Charlie Russell and a new community choir, formed earlier this year in Heckington. The Heckington Singers regularly attract over 80 singers to each weekly fun rehearsal for all ages and abilities. Choir organiser Andrew Key said: “We are a friendly bunch and everyone seems to have fun.” They will next have a musical evening for Christmas - to join call 01529 461161.
The evening firework concert was another resounding success with more people than ever staying to fill the arena to watch and listen to the sounds of the Sleaford Concert Band, their guest vocalist and the Billinger Ruffs folk band who raised a laugh before rounding off with the War of the Worlds to fireworks.
