MEMBERS of Wellingore’s Women’s Institute celebrated their 80th anniversary in style with Tango and Tea.

The village WI was founded in 1932 and members marked it with a 1930s style tea dance at Wellingore Memorial Hall with live band, The Monsonnaires. The tango was all the rage at that time, so they themed the event, recruiting family members as partners and waiters.

“It really was a lovely afternoon and a memorable birthday celebration,” said WI president Janis Tunaley.

The village hall was transformed with tables set for afternoon tea with crisp white tablecloths and napkins, balloons painted backdrop by the local drama group and lots of trailing plants to make it look like Palm Court. One member did a flower arrangement based on an old fashioned cake stand, complete with cakes and a cup and saucer.

Everyone dressed the part in fabulous hats, fascinators and hair decorations to set off vintage dresses and long gloves.

Guests were greeted with a fruity cocktail and a letter of good wishes from The Queen.

There was a spectacular birthday cake and a demonstration by young international ballroom dance couple Amy Ward and Fabio D’Angelo from Hull.
