Theatre roof replacement approved

MANAGEMENT of a theatre described as one of the most important buildings in Sleaford has been given permission to replace part of the roof.

Owners of The Playhouse in Sleaford have been granted permission unanimously by North Kesteven District Council’s planning committee to replace the roof and insert three roof lights and guttering to a adjoining building to the rear.

The officers’ recommendation was originally to refuse the application as the proposed materials to replace the roof were not thought to be appropriate for this Grade II listed building, however the scheme was granted Listed Building Consent subject to conditions regarding the roofing and architectural details.

Tony Gordon, Sleaford Little Theatre chairman, said that the roof is in dire need of repair as it is used to house the props and costumes and as a dressing room during performances. It is very cold during the winter and hot during the summer.

He said: “The thermal efficiency for example is poor and the building is damp, our heating bill is very high to no avail and there is also no sound proofing so there is a problem with noise pollution when there is a show on.”

The plans will see the existing asbestos roof replaced with grey roof panelling, guttering and three new roof lights.

Coun David Suiter pointed out that the building is a very important one for Sleaford and that it needs to be supported. Coun Geoff Hazelwood also praised the hard work of the committee who keep the theatre going.
