Town councillors back Maltings project

Sleaford Town Councillors have thrown their weight behind a bid to speed along the redevelopment and restoration of the Bass Maltings.
A long running dispute over whether Sleaford Town Council will allow a link road to cross Boston Road Recreation ground serving the Maltings and new Tesco schemes has held up both projects.
But development firm Gladedale now has requested an amendment to planning conditions for the disused industrial complex.
Back in November 2011 North Kesteven District Councillors permitted the project, but a link road from Mareham Lane to Boston Road had to be completed before the first phase of development of office space and 24 dwellings was occupied.
A Gladedale spokesperson said: “Due to the considerable external repair costs of the redevelopment it is no longer viable to develop the first two phases of the project in isolation. Given the projected timescales for the delivery of the relief road we have submitted a planning application requesting that this condition be removed.
“If approved, this will allow the regeneration of The Maltings to progress without further delays, however the financial contributions towards highway improvements proposed as part of the previous application will remain.”
The applicants have submitted assessments claiming to show the development in full can be safely accommodated on the local road network without undue congestion, prior to the completion of the link road.
All town councillors supported the proposal barring one abstention at last week’s meeting, arguing there had been no need for a road until Tesco came along. Coun Mark Graves could understand Gladedale’s argument. The scheme would produce around 228 homes, while the district council’s core strategic plan would generate around 3,000 to the north of the town and another 1,400 homes off London Road with no visible road infrastructure improvements.
Coun Brian Watson said he would still like to see some road improvements for access to the site. The council would push for funding for that work.+
