JOHN and Ida Thompson, of Dorrington, marked 70 years of marriage with a big family party on Saturday at Leasingham Village Hall.

Their daughter Hazel Robinson said: “It was a brilliant occasion and most of the people said it couldn’t have had a better ‘do. Mum and dad really enjoyed themselves.”

John and Ida, both 90, first met in 1941 while queuing for the same film at Sleaford’s cinema.

They agreed to watch the film together and went for a walk afterwards. They have been together ever since.

The couple married in Rauceby Church on June 8, 1942 and lived with Ida’s family in Rauceby for a while before moving to a specially converted army hut in Martin.

They moved into their bungalow in Dorrington 56 years ago and have lived there ever since.

John was in the Army during the Second World War and also worked at the Sleaford Maltings. Ida was a care assistant at Rauceby Hospital.

Ida and John have four daughters, Hazel, Betty, Carole and Linda. Their son Ashley died in a motorcyle accident 13 years ago. They also have eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The couple enjoy coach holidays and also liked touring the country in their car, visiting many places including Scotland and Wales.

John said the secret to a long and happy marriage was working together and added: “We have had a lovely time together over the years and have a beautiful family. We have had our ups and downs but have always been there for one another.”
