Memories come flooding back as old Ruskington school is demolished

Times up for the old school as the demolition team wades in.

Times up for the old school as the demolition team wades in.

MALCOLM Haywood of Ruskington has dropped into the Sleaford Standard offices to take us on a trip down memory lane to his school days.

Mr Haywood, of Greenfinch Close, was a pupil at Ruskington Secondary Modern School not long after it was first built.

He was sad to see the old 1950s building being pulled down by contractors recently as they make way for the new, purpose built premises forming the Ruskington campus of St George’s Academy.

He took some pictures of the bulldozers smashing in, seen below, then took us back to an image he has of the school photographed in 1957. The school had opened the year before under the control of headteacher Morris Butler.

Mr Haywood says it is a shame to see the old bulding go, but alsio had another old picture of his school days taken during a Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition from RAF Cranwell in 1961.

He is in the photo on the left writing. Also in the picture from left are Jock Campbell, Paul Merril, Robert Vincent and school masters Dennis Manders and David Benfield.
