1937
l A dog owner from Fulbeck Lowfields was fined 10s and ordered to pay 7s 6d costs for not having his animal under control. The sheepdog was destroyed after it growled and sprang at a farm labourer in the main road in Leadenham, tearing his coat.
l Mrs A G Brown was leading ladies’ physical culture and tap classes in the old Scout Room near the Monument in Southgate, Sleaford. There were also classes for older ladies.
l Sleaford Urban District Council’s highways committee reported a lot of paving slabs on footpaths in the town had been broken by contractors laying cable during the change over scheme taking place. Some slabs were very uneven near Lloyds Bank, one could even play see-saw on some, said a councillor. The electric lighting company was instructed to take more care and reimburse the council for breakages.
l Frozen pitches and illness all but put paid to the match schedule for weekend. Cranwell No.2 Wing was beaten 5-2 by Rauceby Hospital with Dickinson netting four goals.
l Aircraft Apprentices and boys of the Electrical and Wireless School defeated the RAF College by 24 points to 21 in a boxing match held at the West Camp gymnasium.
1963
l Lincoln Cooperative Society announced they had bought Dodson’s grocer and general store premises at 56 Southgate, Sleaford. The premises comprised sales shop, store, office, store room and two storey warehouse.
l Kesteven Water Board engineers and workmen had been on duty for up to 15 hours a day during the current big freeze. In a desperate attempt to keep over 71,000 people supplied with water standpipes were connected to mains in villages and tanks hired to take water to farms as frost penetrated to a depth of 20 inches. Eight water towers were out of action and householders were warned that sinks may not be properly earthed if iron pipes had been repaired with plastic ones.
l Herbert King of Fulbeck had retired as a paperboy aged 75 having done the job for half a century. This could well have been a national record.
l The 14 members of the Sleaford Physical Culture Club were highlighted. Having formed in 1953 they met for training above the Carre Arms Hotel. The small but active club hosted the county championship and 49-year-old dental technician Frank Lakey had already won several titles including the nine stone county record for straight arm pullovers while Pete Moore held the North Midlands Deep Knees Bend record as well as being the nine stone North Midlands bench press champion.
l Sleaford police were looking for a thief with a headache after Scotney and Sons garage on East Road was broken into. Two bottles of aspirin and £3 in cash were taken. Petty cash was stolen by burglars from Ruskington Secondary Modern School and flour thrown around the canteen.
1987
l Lincolnshire Darts Association County Men’s Individual Championship was played before a capacity crowd at the Anwick sports and social club. John Marriott of Sleaford beat Robert Richie of Holbeach in the final to take the title.
l Blankney Golf Club member William Erskine achieved the feat of a hole in one for the second time in his 15 year golfing career. He received the Johnny Walker International Hole In One award for his ace on the club’s 163 yard 11th hole.
l Businessmen John Larder and Richard Pattinson unveiled plans to convert Eastgate House on East Road in a major new hotel in Sleaford 14 en-suite bedrooms and functions centre for up to 150 people. There would be a wine bar, public bars, lounge and dining room and the hotel, as yet unnamed, would be opening before Christmas. Built in 1867, the property had previously been used as flats and then offices by owners Pattinson Builders Merchants.
l Sleaford Swimming Pool management committee opted to close the outdoor pool for the time being to save £27,000 and help make up a deficit of £136,000. It was possible it could be scrapped for good.
l Lincs Senior B Cup holders Sleaford Town bowed out of the season’s competition when they were beaten 2-0 by Nettleham.
