YOU may think women’s football and cricket teams are a modern phenomenon, but sleaford is proof that such enlightened values have been around for years.

Tony owen, of ruskington, formerly lived in sleaford and worked for sharpe’s seeds and has brought in his photo of the women’s cricket team for sharpes’ seeds taken in june 1948.

He says: “all the players worked for sharpes’ and it was not rare to have a ladies cricket team in sleaford. As well as sharpes’, woolworth’s and sketchley’s factory had teams and we had a little league playing matches against each other.

“We had a little sports club and i was its secretary. They had a ladies’ cricket team, a men’s cricket team, men’s and ladies football teams, their own tennis courts and bowling green. There was quite a bit to do socially.”

He recalls that one of the women in the team emigrated to Canada, but he would love to get in touch with them again. He said they did not have a special cricket pitch, just played anywhere they could put some wickets up.

“The men mostly turned out in whites or grey flannels, but the ladies didn’t have those.”

Most in teh team would have been in their early twenties, where are they now? Call us on 01529 416340, or email: andy.hubbert@jpress.co.uk
