EDITOR-I am sure that, like myself the vast majority of Sleafordians will be delighted by the Lincolnshire highways' decision to scrap the much criticised traffic lights recently installed at the Northgate/Southgate/Market Place junction, though I do accept there may be some people with a contrary view.
In the wake of this fiasco, dare I suggest that those in authority tasked with making the vital decisions affecting traffic flows in the town should apply the same logic to the proposed permanent closure of Southgate railway crossing and the resultan
t re-routing of southern traffic via Mareham Lane and the Maltings to the Boston Road?
I believe that most people in town consider such a development would have the same serious affect on traffic movement as the recently installed and now defunct lights caused. In reality it could be even worse.
Fortunately, in the case of the traffic lights, it will be easy, even if costly, to return to the status quo. Regrettably that would not be the case in many of the 200 year old trees in the Boston Road recreation ground are felled to make way for the road and a new rail bridge built enforcing the closure of the Southgate railway crossing.
In that event and in those circumstances it would be far too late for the townsfolk to say 'we told you so', as was the case with the traffic lights.
Surely common sense should prevail.
