A pilot project using library books to help county youngsters with problems affecting their health and happiness has been launched with a special event in Sleaford.

Books on Prescription are now available to children and young people at Sleaford library.

Teachers or other people who work with youngsters will ‘prescribe’ books they think could help. The young person simply has to take the ‘prescription’ to their local library to collect the recommended reading on loan.

All the books can be borrowed by any library member even if they do not have a ‘prescription’. For further information on the initiative, visit www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/libraries.

To mark the launch of the pilot, year five pupils from William Alvey School in Sleaford came to the library to watch a children’s entertainer, have a reading from author Nick Toczek and learn about how they can make use of the prescription service.

Jonathan Platt, head of libraries and heritage, said: “Similar schemes have already proved successful elsewhere, and there’s evidence to show that books really can help. Many of these books are self-help titles, giving you advice and information on issues like bullying and body image.

“Your parent or carer may also be given a prescription for a book that will help them understand how you are feeling.”

This service is free – all you need is your library card. If the book is unavailable that day, it can be ordered and staff will get it for you as soon as possible.

If the pilot proves popular, it will be rolled out to other sites.
