CHILDREN from William Alvey School in Sleaford let their imaginations roam free to explore shapes, textures and colour in a project which could see them become the designers of the future.

The front of the Main Gallery at the National Centre for Craft and Design in town was turned over to become the Big Toy Factory for a day earlier this month as part of a partnership scheme between the centre and the University of Lincoln.

Working in teams, the children had to design and create a new pull along toy. They painted their ideas onto wooden boards which were then cut out and assembled by the team from the university.

The end result was a fully functioning pull along toy that the children were able to take home. It even had its own branding tag attached.

Teacher Rachel Andrew said: “This was a fabulous opportunity for our pupils to experience an industry based design process. It was a fantastic day.”

Three more Big Toy Factory days have been planned at the centre. Designing festival decorations will take place on March 14; Designing a new product using traditional and digital techniques takes place on March 23 and designing and building a den is on May 16.
