Bus trip to enjoy art in historic house settings

THE Wellingore-based Beacon art project is launching its latest exhibition, Compass, and will be laying on transport to make it more accessible to enthusiasts from the Sleaford area.

For its 2012 exhibition show, running from October 6–28, Beacon has commissioned new works by leading international artists specific for the historic Lincolnshire houses of Woolsthorpe Manor near Grantham, Ayscoughfee Hall Museum in Spalding and Grimsthorpe Castle near Bourne.

On Sunday October 21, Compass is inviting residents of Sleaford to view the works in beautiful, historic settings. A coach excursion will allow visitors from the town to access and travel to art in these remote locations with a pick-up from The Hub, Navigation Wharf at 10.15am.

Tickets cost £7.50 (which includes transport and entry) and must be booked in advance from www.beaconartproject.org.

At Ayscoughfee Hall, last year’s Artist of the Week for the Guardian, Bethan Huws’ soundwork is among the garden topiary, a homage to the resident gardener who created surreal sculptures from the ancient yew trees. Performance artist Amanda Coogan has studied at many art institutions and has exhibited work in Europe and America. She will be working with seven emerging performance artists to create a piece that will also take place in the gardens of Ayscoughfee Hall.

Jem Finer is a well-respected visual artist with works shown at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Trinity Buoy Wharf, London. He will be showcasing his caravan-come-flight simulator, !Arriba!, where the only limits in this twee caravan are the imagination.

Jordan Baseman is an award-winning film maker who has had solo shows of his films at Baltic, Los Angeles Animation Festival and Melbourne Underground Film Festival. His work is inspired by his previous work with a group of local ghost hunters, as he interviews the leading ghost hunter and trance medium from the local area.

The Beacon project was set up in 2004 by John Plowman and Nicola Streeten.

Other coach excursions will runn from elsewhere in the county.
