Choral concert is a shepherd’s tale
A CHORAL concert with an agricultural theme is being staged at a village church.
Shepherds Arise is a fascinating account of life in a 19th century agricultural community, recounted through the eyes and experiences of an 11-year-old shepherd boy, Jim, and his life in a farming village accompanied by a musical sound-track of the time.
The concert, performed by the Greenwood Quire, will take place at 3pm on Sunday May 27, in Aslackby Church, featuring eight sung musical items, linked by prose.
The Greenwood Quire was formed in 2011, mainly to sing and play the quirky material that used to be sung from the West Galleries of English parish churches, as well as chapels, between about 1690 and 1830. This performance, while including two from the west gallery tradition, will mainly focus on the songs and prose handed down to us by rural communities in Sussex (not dissimilar to Lincolnshire at that time). Some songs come unique’y from Jim’s family and the villages nearby.
Join the concert to celebrate an agricultural experience of the time, largely un-mechanised and unchanged for hundreds of years and the music that helped express the religious sentiments of farming people.

* THERE will be a classical music concert by The Fenland Consort held at St Michael’s Church Swaton in aid of church funds.
The event is taking place on Sunday May 27 starting at 3pm and there will be a retiring collection for those attending, all welcome.
The programme of music includes pieces by Henry Purcell, Johan Friederich Fasch, Johann Christian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, Malcolm Arnold, Brian Stout, Georg Frideric Handel and cello/guitar duets by Enrique Granados and Luigi Boccherini.
