Famous authors help celebrate 10 years of awards success
COUNTY children will have the chance to meet two of their favourite authors as the Lincolnshire Young People’s Book Awards celebrates its 10th anniversary.
On Tuesday February 21 well-known authors Morris Gleitzman and Georgia Twynham will be on-hand to help promote this year’s awards.
Children’s author Morris was born in Sleaford and lived here until he was two but later moved to Australia. Georgia lives in Leicestershire. The writers will be appearing at Sleaford Library from 3-4pm where anyone can go along and meet them.
There will also be a chance to buy signed copies of their works, which are being made available in partnership with local bookshop Walkers.
The awards are run annually by Lincolnshire Libraries to find the ‘best read’ of the year as voted for by young people aged 9 - 14.
Coun Patricia Bradwell, Executive Member for Children’s Services, said: “We’re delighted that Morris and Georgia have chosen to support this year’s awards. Both have strong ties to Lincolnshire and have proved extremely popular with local readers over the years. In fact, Georgia was one of our winners last year.
“The awards encourage young people to read and use their local libraries, where the long-listed books are available. They can log on to the council’s website to vote for their favourite and submit their reviews. Those taking part will find their reading and writing skills will improve and they’ll enjoy some excellent books too.”
Georgia has championed the project for a number of years, appearing at local schools and promoting it on her website, with her efforts encouraging even more people to get involved.
Speaking at last year’s award ceremony, she said: “If you made one child feel differently about reading or books, then you did an amazing job.”
