Green-fingered pupils win gardening trophy

A SCHOOL garden club has been rated the best in the county.
The Lincolnshire Schools Gardening Trust holds a competition every year to find the best maintained school grounds and last year Heckington St Andrew’s Primary School gardening club came second.
This year the St Andrew’s club has gone one better and taken the top accolade out of 16 entrants from around Lincolnshire.
Teaching assistant Pat Mellor runs the club, with help from volunteer parents and grandparents.
She said: “We thought the weather had been so bad we would not enter because everything was so behind but then thought everyone else must in the same position, so we are glad we did.”
The gardening club has worked hard over the last 11 years growing vegetables and plants in containers and has now created a tranquil garden, a sensory garden and a stumpery garden for wildlife, with a pond.
The club is so popular there are now 40 pupils regularly taking part and it is split into two sessions a week.
Mrs Mellor said they now wanted to focus on a wooded area which has been tidied up and do more to the wildlife garden.
They plan to plant bulbs and shrubs in the autumn using the £100 voucher they were given as a prize for winning the competition.
Mrs Mellor added:: “I want to plant perennials so they come back year after year before I retire.”
