Gritty drama as Sleaford Little Theatre group embarks on new project

SLEAFORD Little Theatre group will mark their 60th anniversary this spring with a powerful performance of Accrington Pals, a true story by Peter Whelan set in 1914 at the start of the First World War.

The play is filled with humour, pathos, drama and tragedy and tells the story of the inhabitants of Accrington in Lancashire during the years 1914-1916 and of how the men of the town joined up to form the battalion known as the Accrington Pals.

One by one we see the young men sign up for life in the trenches and how the women cope back home and learn what happens when the men go over the top at the battle of the Somme. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad but always compelling this is a gritty piece of drama to commemorate 60 years of Sleaford Little Theatre.

Performances are nightly from Wednesday March 24 until Saturday March 27 at 7.30pm.

The year also marks a new chapter in the further development of The Playhouse theatre situated on Westgate, Sleaford. The local amateur players are about to embark on a radical refurbishment of the auditorium, installing raked seating with more comfortable seats.

This will also enlarge the bar area below the new raised seating and work starts when the season ends in the early summer with the new autumn season kicking off with a newly refurbished theatre. Business manager Garry Goodge said: "We have enough funds to start the process but the fundraising will continue to enable us to add better technical facilities and redecoration."

The box office for Accrington Pals will be the Tourist Information Centre, Moneys Yard, Sleaford. Tickets are priced 6 stalls and 7 gallery (1 off for concessions). Telephone bookings can be made on 01529 414294.
