How to fly a Vulcan
GUEST speaker Kevin Lawry will be giving a lecture entitled How to fly a Vulcan – a layman’s guide, at Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre.
Kevin Lawry is a retired RAF officer and former Vulcan pilot and will be taking a light-hearted look at driving one of the world’s iconic aircraft which formed part of this country’s nuclear deterrent V-Force, carrying the Blue Steel cruise missile.
He flew the usual training types on joining the air force and ended up on 230 OCU at RAF Scampton in 1970, to begin his love affair with the Vulcan.
He flew as co-pilot on No 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron, then captain’s tours on 35 and 101 Squadrons with RAFU Goose Bay, Canada. He became a flying instructor in charge of Liverpool UAS and at the UAS Standards Squadron at RAF Cranwell.
Now retired he is trying to get the hang of bell ringing which is says is much harder than flying a Vulcan.
The talk will begin in the old gymnasium at 7.30pm on Wednesday, October 24.
Admission is £5 to visitors to include refreshments. It is free to Friends of Metheringham Airfield and veterans of 106 Squadron. Further enquiries contact 01526 378270.
