A LIFE-SIZED brass rubbing of a Jaguar aircraft stationed at RAF Cranwell is to go on display at the University of Lincoln’s Greestone Gallery.

Prof Ian Howard, Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, will be showing work made in collaboration with the base.

The international artist concentrates on the relationship between civilian and military cultures, working with defence forces around the world, first doing aircraft rubbings with the RAF in 1974 on an Avro Vulcan, Hawker Hunter and a BAC Lightning. In 1975 he made a life sized impression of Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb on Japan.

Prof Norman Cherry, Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of College of Arts at the University of Lincoln, met with officers from RAF Cranwell in 2009 and suggested a ‘brass rubbing’ of the Jaguar based there for groundcrew training.

The Jaguar and other works by Prof Howard will be on display from tomorrow (Thursday) until October 15. He will give an illustrated talk on Thursday from 11am to 1pm at the Tithe Barn Lecture Theatre in Greestone Building.
