Karen switches careers and sets up supper clubs in new venture

After a career in aviation a Lincolnshire food fanatic has decided to turn her culinary skills in to a business and is also bidding to introduce supper clubs to the county.

Karen Connolly, from Anwick, left the RAF last year and retrained in a completely different field.

She completed an eight month professional diploma in food and wine from the renowned London cookery school Leith’s School of Food and Wine.

“I’m a fanatic foodie and obsessed with all things food,” Karen said. “As a result I felt I wanted to do something that would bring a foodie feel to Lincolnshire.”

Karen set up Lexi’s Larder providing catering, teaching and celebration cakes.

However, the part of the venture she is most excited about is the setting up of a ‘secret’ supper club.

Karen explains: “These are very popular in London and the concept is starting to filter though to other areas. It consists of holding a restaurant evening or afternoon in a domestic house instead of a restaurant. Meaning you get a relaxed and homely atmosphere whilst still eating top class food. It’s a great chance to meet new people and most importantly in theses tight economic times, as its a b.y.o.b event (due to licensing laws) where you get a three course meal with an aperitif, amuse bouche and tea or coffee all for a set price, in the region of £30.”

She said this made it potentially a lot less than a restaurant meal and bringing your own wine reduces the costs further.

Karen adds: “I’m also looking at holding some vintage afternoon tea events as well, so a glass of sparkly, posh sandwiches, scones, yummy cakes and tea of course.”
