Landscapes in light show

Streetlight by Clare Welling.

Streetlight by Clare Welling.

Lincolnshire based artist Clare Welling is exhibiting her innovative landscape paintings of the county in the ExChange Space at the National Centre for Craft and Design in Sleaford until June 2.

Featuring real lights they animate her nightscape paintings of Lincolnshire landscapes creating an absorbing atmosphere, entitled Painting My Way Home: Lincolnshire Landscapes.

“I want to engulf the viewer in my work. I’m very aware when travelling how small I am in my car against the backdrop of the Lincolnshire sky. I hope to recreate that feeling within the space and draw viewers into my paintings” says Clare.

“The lights in the distance of my view are my guide and I feel very aware of where I am heading and where I want to be.”

Clare has been greatly inspired by the poems of Philip Larkin and his descriptions of the sky, land and views as he travelled through Lincolnshire. Her smaller pieces and sketchbooks show reference to his writing and ‘illustrate’ verses and phrases from his poems.

Clare has recently exhibited in a group show of New Contemporary Artists in London and is currently working on an installation of smaller pieces. She trained at Goldsmiths studying fine art and art history and was particularly influenced by Avis Newman and the concept of memory.
