Music is the drug for The Headaches
AN indie post-punk rock band from Sleaford is making a name for itself gigging in the Sleaford and Lincoln area.
Previously known as A Conflict Of Interest, the young group had their first gig as The Headaches in late 2008 at The Mabern Club in Sleaford.
After the introduction of vocalist Daniel Betney in late March 2009 and a period of song-writing, covering and polishing, the new look five-piece line-up (Daniel Betney on vocals, Ali Allen and Tom Richardson on guitars, Dan Priestley – bass and Jack Nelson the drummer) played their first gig at Scopwick Village Hall in early April.
Tom said: "We had been jamming for about a year then Daniel became interested in singing and met up with us at a party."
The band have five gigs under their belts now, the most recent at the Nag's Head, Sleaford and they have a regular slot at the Waggon and Horses in town. Finding opportunities for gigs on the Sleaford music scene quite restrictive, they are looking to branch out into cities such as Lincoln, London, Leeds and Liverpool.
Bearing more than a passing resemblance to Pete Doherty's bands The Libertines and Babyshambles, The Headaches play their own songs such as Geoffrey and Rohypnol and covers such as Banquet by Bloc Party and Transmission by Joy Division.
Made up of sixth form students from St George's College, Carre's Grammar School and Grantham College, the band tends to make songwriting a joint effort and new material is churning out of the creative mix quite quickly at the moment.
Tom cites his influences as Kings of Leon, Oasis and rock n roll while Dan listens to a lot of old music by The Kinks and the Rolling Stones as well as The Strokes.
They have just completed a recording session for a five-track demo disc at Sleaford's ASH Studios with the help of Dan Hare, formerly of The Jubilees. The songs are now available to hear on their increasingly popular webpage at www.myspace.com/theheadaches
Tom said feedback from the demo CD had been pretty good and they all agreed that their live music went down well, being catchy and instantly memorable.
Asked where they had their sights set, Dan replied cautiously: "It is a good laugh and we would like to make something of this, but you don't go into it thinking you are going to make it big."
Although they have just finished they sixth form studies, most of them plan to stick around for a year to see how it goes, except for Jack who is heading to St Martin's Art College in London.
