Open gardens show should be blooming great
SLEAFORD IN Bloom is holding its annual open gardens weekend and there will be more gardens than ever to look around this year.
There will be 19 gardens and allotments opened to the public over the two days for the event which is becoming one of the main fundraisers for the scheme to supply the volunteers with plants and compost and other equipment necessary to keep the town looking a floral delight during the year.
Maureen Bramley, one of the organisers, said they hoped the sun would be kind to attract a good number of visitors. She said it seems to becoming more and more popular each year: "Some of the gardens have opened before and have done extra bits to them this year, some have had a break and com back to us while we have some new gardens including a couple of allotments and more want to join in next year."
Visitors can visit the gardens between 2pm and 6pm (unless stated otherwise). Admission is 3 per person per day (accompanied children free). Tickets are available in advance from Sleaford Library, Sleaford Tourist Information Centre and The Hub, or over the weekend from participating gardens and the Hub. You can also pick up a guide listing all the gardens giving descriptions and their locations including a map.
Visitors will be treated to a wide range of garden styles and sizes, from big lawns to low maintenance gravels with pots, lovely water features to mature gardens, wildlife gardens to new gardens that are a work in progress.
Michelle Weston's garden in Millfield Terrace is a new addition to the schedule. It is a densely planted garden with lots of unusual plants, ferns and hostas in shady areas. A path leads to a summerhouse and allotment. She will be selling plants for GIFTS Hospice.
A number of gardeners will be selling plants, refreshments and cards in aid of a variety of charities and some will offer toilet facilities.
Also, as part of the Armed Forces Day celebrations, there will be a trail around the gardens. See if you can find the item of military transport at each venue to win a hamper of Lincolnshire 'goodies'. Free competition entry forms are available from Sleaford Tourist Information Centre, Money's Yard, Carre Street, Sleaford up to Saturday June 27 and from the Tourist Information stall at the market place on Sunday.
