Scarecrow contest adds to feast weekend

A scarecrow making competition organised to be part of the Billinghay Feast proved to be a huge success on its debut.

The feast and competition ran from Thursday to Sunday, October 11-14 to coincide with the annual fun fair in the field behind the Coach and Horses pub, drawing bigger crowds to the village who then took the time to look around at all the scarecrow creations in people’s gardens.

About 50 households took part with some having as many as five scarecrows. They really went to town and showed true community spirit with 85 people turning up at the community room to see the winning entries where tea and cake was served and £200 was raised for upkeep of the village swimming pool.

This was the first year the competition has been run and an annual cup was donated to use again in future. Prizes were donated for first second and third places.

Winner was Mr and Mrs South with Postman Pat, second was Mr and Mrs Bush with The Happy Fisherman and third was Irene and Stan Hampson with Trouble At Mill.
