Singing sensation to perform at the O2 Arena
Thirteen-year-old singing sensation Jamie Chatterton will be taking his turn in the grand final of the Open Mic UK singing competition at London’s O2 Arena this weekend.
The Carre’s Grammar School pupil beat dozens of talented youngsters in Dewsbury in November to qualify. Jamie had support from his sister and her three friends as backing dancers, but now he will be competing against 30 other youngsters where the winners will receive thousands of pounds towards the development of their music.
To make things fairer for those Grand Finalists who live outside London and can’t get all their supporters there because of the expense, organisers have announced the addition of a text vote instead of the audience ticket vote system used in previous rounds to make it easier to count (www.openmicuk.co.uk/national_vote). Mum Sarah said: “We were pretty angry about the change initially but actually, on reflection it’s a much cheaper way for people to support him.”
In order to win Open Mic UK Jamie must be in the top three judges’ scores in his age category. The rest will be eliminated before the text vote count. Those in the judges’ top three will be ranked and added to the text voting, which will also be ranked. The acts with the combined highest ranking will be winners of their age category. Texts cost the normal £1 plus a standard operators message.
He said: “I’m a bit nervous about performing in the Indigo Theatre in the O2 because it’s a much bigger venue and there will be loads more people in the audience but I’m also really excited because it will be an incredible experience.”
