Sweet pea sensation
EVERY year, Easton Walled Gardens, near Grantham, raises hundreds of sweet pea plants from seed in the greenhouses – a spectacular sight which can be seen in full bloom during Sweet Pea Week from July 1-8.
Renowned for their fragrance and vibrant colours, sweet peas evoke the essence of summer.
Easton Walled Gardens, which spreads over 12 acres, invites visitors to explore over 60 types of sweet pea - heritage, modern, scented, striped, edged and bicolour sweet peas are displayed on canes, drums and wigwams throughout the pickery, vegetable and cottage gardens.
Those wishing to bring a bit of summer to their own homes can pick their own bunch of sweet peas, while those with green-fingers can also buy sweet pea seeds from the Easton Walled Gardens shop.
David Austin Roses flourish among meadow grasses and a new orchard of local varieties has been grafted and planted this autumn. The fascinating history behind the revival of this ‘lost’ garden is revealed in the history room.
Easton Walled Gardens are open four days a week until October 2012, from 11am with last entry at 4pm. Admission is £6.25 for adults, £2.00 for children and free to Friends of Easton Walled Gardens.
