A PHOTOGRAPHIC project by 12 students has been unveiled outside the National Centre for Craft and Design in Sleaford.

The 2.45m square cube is located on Eastgate Green and is covered with photographic images create by the 12 students undergoing an alternative education based at Hill Holt Wood, in Norton Disney with the assistance of artsNK photographer Jane Harrison.

The teenagers explored how they could use photography to express their emotions and show how they feel about their lives and the world around them. “For some of the students this was the first time they had taken up a camera so it was exciting working with ‘raw recruits,” said Jane.

The Inside Out project was the idea of ranger Shaun Vickers who was inspired by French artist/photographer JR, who in 2006, launched “Portrait of a Generation,” huge portraits of suburban youth from Paris posted on the walls of the bourgeois districts of Paris.

“I wanted my students to create a similar large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone was challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share their personal stories and images,” said Mr Vickers.

Jane added: “Originally it was putting pictures on walls but I thought we could do better than that. The cube is because young people often get put into boxes.”

This was echoed by Hill Holt Wood chief executive Karen Lowthrop who said the young people who go there just do not fit into the box but when given the right space to grow they become young individuals that are good for society. The cube will be on show until Friday.
