The world famous Mariachi band – Mariachi Mexteca (from the recent Doritos TV advertisement campaign) entertained pupils and their families at an acoustic gig at Kesteven and Sleaford High School.

The Mexican themed night of entertainment was held in the main hall at the school and teacher Jaime Schofield said they were extremely lucky to secure such a popular band, who have performed for and in front of some members of the Royal family, numerous British and Hollywood celebrities in both public and private functions as well as premiers and BAFTA awards parties.

This event was organised to fundraise and boost awareness for the charity organisation Operation Wallacea, who manage many conservation projects, aimed at protecting endangered species and habitats all around the world. The evening raised over £1,200 in support of a trip by some High School students.

The school is sending 18 students to the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico in July 2013, to act as volunteers who will gather vital scientific data to be used in the fight against deforestation in the area.

This expedition could potentially save a vital migratory corridor for the jaguar and also other species in the area such as the tapir and spider monkey. The students will also be actively involved in the protection of sea turtles and their nesting sites around the Meso-American reef.

Their next fund-raising event will be a Golf Day to be held at Sleaford Golf Club in April.
