We've got the yoga bug!

THE YogaBugs craze that is proving so popular with children started out at St Peter's School in Dunston.

Yoga teacher Penny Cowling decided to start a YogaBugs class after the great response her own children had from learning yoga techniques.

She approached the head teacher of her children’s school, Graham Boyall at St Peter’s, who was keen to give it a go.

Penny said: “I used to be a primary school teacher and I wanted to return to work after having my children. I was really impressed with the benefits my children have seen from yoga, so I launched a YogaBugs class in October last year.”

Penny holds two after school classes a week for the Reception and Year One children and the classes have attracted 73 per cent of children.

Headteacher Graham Boyall said: “The children absolutely love it and it’s proved to be hugely popular.

“Learning yoga techniques is really good for them as it increases their suppleness and improves their concentration and its all done in a fun way through story-telling and using their imagination.”

With St Peter’s signed up for an ongoing programme and other schools taking a keen interest, we could be seeing more of YogaBugs in years to come .
