Young musicians close to Live and Unsigned dream
A SLEAFORD band has made it through to the regional finals of a national competition.
Paperface, who are Ben Kutzner, 23 on bass guitar and vocals, James Palmer, 24, on lead guitar and vocals, and Karina Lawrence, 21, on drums and vocals, auditioned for Live and Unsigned 2010 in Brighton and were chosen out of 300 acts to go through to the next round in April.
The competition is open to any unsigned act in the UK and is judged by some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Sex Pistols founder Malcolm McLaren and Radio 1 DJs Greg James and Annie Nightingale.
Ben said: "We had two minutes to play one of our own songs to seven judges. It was sort of an X-Factor style audition.
"We performed Moonbow and then had to wait about 20 minutes before they came and told us we had got through to the regional finals."
As the band auditioned in Brighton, where Karina is at university, they are in the Brighton and Hove regional finals, but if they win they'll compete in the grand final at the O2 Arena. Prizes include cash investments, recording time, and extreme sporting days.
Ben added: "We're all really excited and it's awesome to get this far. We've been told we're very original from anything else that's out there,"
The band, who describe themselves as happy grunge/pop/rock, are influenced by Biffy Clyro, Reuben and The Cardiacs among others. They will perform their version of Otis Reading's Sitting on the Dock of the Bay and their own song Moonbow.
"We've all been in bands before and lots of people like us and like what they have heard," said Ben.
Paperface will be playing at Scy Bar in Lincoln on February 23 and at The Nags Head in Sleaford on March 28.
