AN appeal is being made to save a historic village church from possible closure.
St Margaret's Church in Huttoft is in need of new wardens to handle its upkeep and supporters to appeal for grants to cover £50,000 worth of repairs.
Around 60 people turned out the meeting held recently at the church to discuss its future.
Addressing the group, the Rev Daffyd Robinson said: "There are only six members left on the local PCC and they are all in their seventies and eighties. If this church is to have a future we need younger people to get involved."
It was revealed the church's roof is in need of repair, and the tower has become 'dangerous'. With a previous unsuccessful appeal for funding from English Heritage, the council are now looking for help from the public to appeal again.
In a newsletter handed out to local residents John Turner from Huttoft PCC said: "St Margaret's church is a building of considerable antiquity and interest. It is the church featured in Sir John Betjeman's poem A Lincolnshire Church. Even though it's a Grade I listed building, it could cease to be available for worship or community use!"
Daffyd added: "I don't think this church will have much of a future unless other people get involved – even if the repairs are made."
St Margaret's church is situated next to Huttoft Primary School on Church Lane and is said to have inspired Sir John Betjeman's A Lincolnshire Church. It is believed to have been used as a church site since the thirteenth century, undergoing restoration in 1869 and further repairs in 1882.
