MABLETHORPE'S veteran marathon runner Barrie Siddons has spoken to the Leader about his dramatic fall at the town's recent Festival of Running.
Barrie, 68, was taking part in the 26.2 mile full marathon, when 13 miles into the race he lost his footing and fell to the ground, cutting his head, hand and arm.
He said: "My left foot hit an uneven bit of ground and I just went over. I had blood spurting from my head and dripping into my eyes so I couldn't see anything."
After being treated by a LIVES First Responder, Barrie refused to give up and carried on running for another 14 miles to complete the race.
He said: "I had to run with a dressing held to my head until it stopped bleeding and my shirt and registration number were covered in blood.
"This is my first fall in a marathon, but I did fall and break my hand in the Great North Run a few years ago."
He added: "Out of the 32 marathons I have completed, this was the toughest, because of what happened."
Ex Navy man Barrie, was running to raise money for children's charity Dreams Come True, and said he hopes to have raised around £100.
