TWO events are being held in the district to give young people an insight into local democracy.
The first event is being held at the North Kesteven District Council Civic Suite, Kesteven Street, Sleaford on Tuesday, October 14, and the second at the Robert Pattinson School, North Hykeham on Thursday, October 16.

They are being held as part
of Local Democracy Week, a national event aimed at getting more young people aware of and involved in their local council.

The North Kesteven events will consist of a mock planning committee meeting, where pupils will take part in a full debate alongside councillors and make a decision based on their arguments.

The debate will be based on a vegetable producer’s mock application to install an anaerobic digestion plant on his land.

The district council’s executive board member with responsibility for younger people, Coun Marjorie Duncan, said: “Teaching young people about politics and democracy through events such as these is a great way of getting them interested and actively involved in the subject.

“It is vital that young people are aware of, how and why their local council operates so they are not only able to access the full range of services available, but also have enough of an interest in their local community to vote.”
