£500,000 flooding work
A half million pound project to protect homes from flooding started on Monday.
Anglian Water is increasing the capacity of existing sewers and building additional storage tanks near to The Drift in Walcott to dramatically reduce the risk of sewage flooding homes and gardens after periods of heavy rainfall. In the past, heavy downpours have overwhelmed parts of the drainage network. The project is expected to be completed by the end of March.
Antony Innes, from Anglian Water, said: “Nobody wants to suffer from sewer flooding – it is truly unpleasant. We do know some homes are more at risk than others when we experience very heavy storms or prolonged wet periods, which is why we are working in areas like Walcott to increase the drainage capacity and reduce the risk of flooding in the village.”
To allow the work to be carried out quickly part of The Drift, from the junction with Castle View, will be closed to traffic from Monday February 18 for four weeks with diversions along the B1189 High Street, Walcott Road, Fen Road, Gravelhill Drove and Long Drove.
Mr Innes said: “Sewage flooding is often caused by blockages in the pipes and pumping stations. In many cases these blockages are entirely avoidable and the result of things like wipes and sanitary products combining with cooking fats, greases and leftovers which are wrongly put down toilets and plugholes across the region.”
