Cream of the crop flock to Cereals

THOUSANDS of farmers and agricultural specialists from all over the country descended on Boothby Graffoe last week for Cereals 2012, the UK’s largest arable event.
More than 27,000 farmers and industry experts attended the two-day event on Wednesday and Thursday.
There were 64 hectares of stands and live demonstrations, including crop plots, working demonstrations and a Sprays and Sprayers arena, plus an area specially for renewable energy, biofuels and non-food crops.
Around 500 arable suppliers exhibited at Cereals 2012, offering the latest products in their field and giving advice and information on a huge variety of services.
Visitors were able to receive expert advice on issues such as crop protection, cultivation, irrigation and water management and view displays featuring the latest farming equipment and machinery.
Despite the threat of rain, the weather stayed dry for the two days, much to the relief of the organisers.
Cereals’ spokesman Robert Harris said: “We had a great couple of days. There was the usual mix of businesses offering technical advice and we were really lucky with the weather which held off very well for us.”
At this year’s event, farming charity the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution launched its Just Ask campaign to raise awareness of the different ways the charity can help farming families in need.
RABI’s head of fundraising, marketing and communications Lisa Venthen said: “The campaign’s message is simple, if you or someone you know works, or has worked, in agriculture and is in short or long-term financial difficulty, help is only a phone call away - just ask.”
